Sam Bradford Officially a St. Louis Ram
By all accounts, the 2008 Heisman winner blew the personnel gurus away in his 63-throw workout. Bradford connected on 49 of 50 passes of all different types. Posts, outs, short, deep -- Bradford did it all, and he did it flawlessly.
Gil Brandt of NFL.com likened Bradford's performance to one he saw 20 years ago from another Oklahoman: Troy Aikman
Bradford "almost left me speechless. And that's saying something," Brandt wrote on his blog for NFL.com.
Said Mike Mayock, another NFL.com analyst, "Everything I saw about this kid tells me he'll be the first pick of the St. Louis Rams."
How about everyone's new favorite draft agitator, Todd McShay? Bradford "excelled in his workout and looked every bit like a franchise quarterback," he wrote on his ESPN.com blog.
I could keep going, but I think you get my drift.
I'm an unabashed fan of Bradford as an NFL prospect. I'm an even bigger fan of the kid who I consider to be the best quarterback in Oklahoma history. Knowing that Bradford passed up a chance at NFL riches for one last go-round as a Sooner, it was tough watching his 2009 season end so tragically.
Since he went down in OU's first game of the season against BYU, Bradford has endured questions about the wisdom of staying on for one more season. Likewise, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops took plenty of undeserved heat for somehow not forcing his quarterback to turn pro last year. In that respect, wowing the scouts on Monday had to feel like a victory in and of itself.
And it's only going to get better for Bradford.
Slingin' Sam was throwing in shorts and a t-shirt against imaginary defenders, so it's way too early to declare him the next Peyton Manning. Yet, after today, there should be doubt now that, come April, the Rams are going to give Bradford a chance to prove if he is.
